Textured vegetable protein (TVP) is a type of soy protein that can be used in place of meat. It makes the perfect meat substitute for vegetarians, and can also be used as a meat extender for ground beef and other dishes. Our soy protein granules are packed with 52g of protein per serving. Also known as textured soy protein (TSP), this is a very versatile ingredient that will absorb the flavor of anything you cook with it. It is delicious for making vegetarian or vegan versions of meatloaf, chili, tacos, meatballs, and sloppy joes. Textured vegetable protein is a nutritious, low-fat substitute for meat-based foods.
Textured vegetable protein also goes by the names texturized vegetable protein, texturized soy protein, textured soy protein, TVP, and TSP.
Cooking with Textured Vegetable Protein
Textured vegetable protein is made from soy flour that has been defatted by extracting the soybean oil. It can be used to make vegetarian burgers, burritos, ground beef, and other kinds of meat. TVP/TSP can also be used as a low-fat and less expensive meat extender or stretcher in place of meat. Its neutral flavor allows it to absorb the flavors of ingredients you cook it with.
To rehydrate TSP for use in recipes, combine equal amounts of TSP and liquid, such as water or broth. Using a hot liquid to speed up the rehydration process, the TSP should be ready for use within 10 minutes. Squeeze out any excess liquid from the soy protein. Use it in place of meat in your dishes and follow the recipe as you normally would. Once rehydrated, textured soy protein will last in the refrigerator for only a few days so be sure to consume it quickly.
