These organic steel cut oats are perfect for making a warm bowl of breakfast oatmeal. They have the same high nutritional value as whole oat groats, but cook faster. Steel cut oats are high in fiber, low in calories, and chock full of flavor.

How to Cook Steel Cut Oats

Here is a basic oatmeal recipe for how to cook steel cut oats:

Ingredients: 1 cup organic steel cut oats, 2-3 cups water (depending on the consistency you prefer), 1/4 tsp. salt.

Stove top instructions: To cook, bring water and salt to a boil. Add organic steel cut oats, reduce heat, and cook 10-15 minutes (depending on the consistency you desire). Stir occasionally. Cover, remove from heat, and let stand a few minutes. Serves two people.

Variations: If you want additional variety to your breakfast cereal, stir in different grains and toppings. Rolled oats, quinoa, chia seeds, or flaxseeds add a variety of texture to the hot cereal. For crunch and additional protein, add walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, or your favorite nut. For sweetness, have a bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar and add raisins, blueberries, apples, bananas, or even sweet potatoes. There are so many combinations you can come up with for steel cut oats, let your imagination run wild!

What are Steel Cut Oats?

Steel cut oats are typically compared to rolled oats and, although both start with the seed kernel of oat plants, that’s where their similarities end. Traditional rolled oats are steamed, rolled out, steamed again, and finally toasted to end with a wafer thin breakfast cereal. The complicated process makes rolled oats easier to digest, which allows your body to break down the oat faster but also leaves you feeling hungry more quickly.

For steel cut oats, the kernels have their outer hulls removed to reveal the inner oat groat. Each groat is then cut into several smaller pieces, leaving the oats less processed. This means that steel cut oats take your body longer to digest so that you stay fuller longer. Because it takes longer for your body to convert the starch in steel cut oats to sugar, steel cut oats rank lower on the glycemic index than rolled oats.

Unlike rolled oats. steel cut oats have a nutty, chewy bite and don’t get gummy when cooled. Their flavor is also versatile and robust, which means that the oats go well with a variety of ingredients without getting overpowered by other flavors.

Our organic steel cut oats can be enjoyed on their own, as part of a protein shake or granola, and as a base for cookies, muffins, and breads. They can also be substituted for whole-wheat flour in some recipes. However, the most popular use of our organic steel cut oats is for oatmeal.

What Experts Say

HEALTH Magazine: In HEALTH Magazine’s 10 Best Foods For Your Heart, oats are described as, “Full of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium. This fiber–rich super food can lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and help keep arteries clear.”

Dr. Oz from the Dr. Oz Show One of Dr.Oz’s staple breakfast foods, “It’s quick easy to make, and superhealthy with some flaxseed oil drizzled in it.”

Health Benefits of Oats

  1. One reason why oats are so nutritious is because they contain more soluble fiber than any other cereal grain. Soluble fiber can slow down the body’s absorption of glucose, which stabilizes blood sugar levels. It can also make people feel full and assist them in losing weight. There is evidence that the soluble fiber in oats can lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), prevent heart disease, and prevent type II diabetes. Steel cut oats contain more fiber than instant oatmeal, so it’s worth taking the extra time to prepare them in the morning to give your body a fiber boost!

  2. Our organic steel cut oats are nutritionally dense in complex carbohydrates, protein, iron, calcium, B vitamins and other minerals.

  3. If you’re looking to lose weight, oats are a nutritious, low calorie option, with about 100 calories for one serving of steel cut oatmeal. Just add your favorite fresh fruit for a nutrient packed and low calorie breakfast.

There are approximately 2 3/4 cups of steel cut oats per pound.
