Whole licorice root is an intense and bitter herb that can be used medicinally or to add complex flavor to meals and sweets. Licorice root is the single most popular herb used in Chinese medicine. Whole licorice root can be used to flavor liquids in the process of making tea or homemade candies.

Other Uses for Whole Licorice Root

The ancient Egyptians used licorice root to make a special beverage called Mai-sus which was found in King Tut’s tomb. Over 5,000 Chinese and Eastern medicine concoctions include licorice root to alleviate a wide range of conditions. Western uses for licorice root have included flavoring tobacco and beer or as a breath freshener. In 1914 Black Vines candy was introduced as the first mainstream licorice candy.
