How Should I Use Stevia Powder?

You can ingest the powder in capsules or mix it into a liquid. The recommended dosage of stevia varies depending on your aim and some require that it be ingested with food. Three doses of 250 mg of steviosides daily was determined to lower blood pressure in a study published to the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 2000. A 2004 study published in Metabolism found that adding 1 gram of steviosides to a meal reduced blood sugar by 18% for those with type 2 diabetes.

Stevia is 250-300 times sweeter than sugar, specifically sucrose, according to a 2008 study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology, so it is important to plan your consumption of the powder to accommodate for its saccharine taste.

What is Stevia Powder?

Stevia is a type of herb that has a naturally, intensely sweet taste. Stevia leaves contain compounds called steviol glycosides, which are responsible for giving the leaves their sweet flavor. One of the two central steviol glycosides that compose the powder, steviosides can be extracted from whole dried organic stevia leaves and ground into a fine powder. The other central glycoside found in the stevia plant is rebaudioside A (reb A) a compound often included in artificial sweeteners.

The stevia plant is native to South America and has been consumed there for hundreds of years. More recently, stevia’s popularity and availability has increased in the United States and other countries as a result of an increasing number of studies that publish findings in support of the health benefits the plant offers and that contradict potential risks associated with its consumption.
