Fenugreek powder, also known as methi, is a spice grounded from the seeds of the fenugreek plant. Fenugreek powder is a fun addition to an Indian dish, or can be used to spice up a tea. It’s also a rich source of vitamins, dietary fiber, iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Taste and Uses

Fenugreek powder has a naturally bitter taste that melts away when cooked and imbues dishes with a slightly sweet, maple-like flavor. It is widely used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine and adds a unique aroma and taste to curries, chutneys, and vegetable dishes. Try it in a seasoning for meats, a sauce for side dishes, or any other food!

Health Benefits of Fenugreek Powder

1) Regulate Blood Sugar: Fenugreek powder may help control blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. A 2005 study published in The British Journal of Pharmacology found that fenugreek seed extract stimulated the secretion of insulin and reduced blood sugar levels in mice. This research has positive implications for the use of fenugreek in managing diabetes.

2) Lower Cholesterol Levels: As a rich source of dietary fiber, fenugreek powder may have a cholesterol-lowering effect. Researchers suggest that the rich soluble fiber content of fenugreek prevents the uptake of cholesterol and bile acids. Additional evidence indicates that fenugreek contains saponins which inhibit the production and absorption of cholesterol.
