Danish Almond Apple Bars

Recipe Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
1 egg, separated
- milk
1 cup <a href="/nuts/almonds/sliced.html">Sliced Natural Almonds</a>
5 or 6 tart apples, pared and sliced
3/4 to 1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Cooking Directions:
1.  In a medium bowl add flour and salt. Cut in the shortening.

2.  Beat egg yolk in measuring cup and add enough milk to make 2/3 of a cup of liqud. Mix well and then stir into flour mixture to make a stiff dough.

3.  On floured surface roll half the dough into a 17" x 12" rectange and place in baking pan.

4.  Sprinkle about a half a cup of sliced almonds over the dough, toss sliced apples with 3 tbsp flour and arrange apples over almonds. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over apples. Beat egg white lightly and brush on top.

5.  Bake at 350 F for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove and brush on more egg white and sprikle on remaining almonds. Bake 5 more minutes until almonds are toasted. Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze while wamr and cut into bars.
