Health Benefits of Mulberry Leaves
Mulberry leaf powder may help lower blood sugar and reduce LDL cholesterol levels. One study demonstrated that participants who ingested mulberry leaf extract with 75 grams of sucrose (table sugar) experienced reduced blood glucose levels during the initial 120 minutes of testing. This was the case for both healthy participants and participants with type 2 diabetes (Mudra, Ercan-Fang, Zhong, Furne & Levitt, 2007). This study and others suggest that consuming mulberry leaf extract may improve blood sugar control.
Another study was conducted to evaluate the lipid-lowering effect of mulberry tea extract on non-diabetic patients with elevated blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The participants were given mulberry leaf extract three times a day before each meal for a period of 12 weeks. The results showed that the mulberry leaf tablets were effective at lowering the total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels. At the same time, HDL “good” cholesterol levels improved. The results also concluded that mulberry leaf supplementation was a safe and effective therapy for treating dyslipidemia (elevated cholesterol or fats in the blood).
